- The advantages of nitrox are well known. By increasing the level of oxygen in the gas we breathe, the nitrogen in the mix is reduced,
so we absorb less N2 under water. This means longer no-stop or shorter deco-stop times.
- However, with any particular nitrox mix there is a maximum operating depth (MOD) determined by the toxic effects of oxygen under
pressure. It is generally thought that a partial pressure of oxygen (ppO2) in excess of 1.6 bar can cause harmful effects to the
nervous system that can lead to epileptic-like seizures. Due to imersion in water seizures most often lead to death by drowning.
- Most nitrox training agencies suggest a “operational depth” based on a ppO2 of 1.6 to 1.2 bar determined by each particular dive.
- The closed circuit rebreather makes nitrox by mixing air with pure O2. Sensors constantly monitor the O2 levels being breathed and
keep the ppO2 at the “set point” by adding or withholding O2 injection. The PO2 setpoint is determined by the diver each dive and
can be changed during the dive.
- Oxygen is added to the breathing gas when the O2 level is reduced by metabolism or when the diver ascends to a shallower depth.
- By choosing a set point of 1.3 bar, the mixes delivered at depth are as follows:
- at 133f 26 per cent O2
at 99fw 32 per cent O2
at 66fw 43 per cent O2
at 50fw 52 per cent O2
at 40fw 59 per cent O2
at 30fw 68 per cent O2
at 20fw 81 per cent O2.
- You no longer must mix for one particular dive to find your diving another site and have the wrong gas!
- Less gas used: only what your body metabolizes in O2.
- At any given moment the breathing mix available from the fully closed-circuit rebreather has the least nitrogen possible, and the
highest FO2 reasonable. This results in the shortest decompression requirements while never allowing the PPO2 to reach a
dangerous level. The effect also allows the diver to off gas during ascent on a progressively richer mix of nitrox.
- Helium Dives: The helium actually used while breathing a closed circuit loop is minimal. The only time you add helium is on decent.
While my students may use 3 or 4 sets of doubles in a trimix course, I use 5 to 10 cf of trimix in the entire course.
